Pura Belpré Honor Award: MAGIC

On January 30th, the American Library Association hosted their yearly Youth Media Awards, live from New Orleans.

Bright was thrilled to watch as MAGIC: ONCE UPON A FARAWAY LAND, written and illustrated by Mirelle Ortega won a Pura Belpré Honor Award. MAGIC was published by Cameron Kids, and it is Mirelle’s debut author-illustrated book. Click here to see Mirelle’s reaction when she found out!

“The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.” - American Library Association. This award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City.
