It’s been a big year for Bright, and now that it draws to a close, there’s nothing left to do but celebrate! New York Times Bestsellers, a record nine Bright artists featured in the Society of Illustrators Original Art show, and many books on end-of-year-lists; we’re grateful for all of the ways in which the hard work of our artists and agents has been recognized.

It was an honor to raise a glass (and a slice of pizza) with the finest creatives from the children’s publishing industry, and celebrate 2018’s successes. We were also grateful to all who popped on a festive accessory and posed for a photo! Enjoy a little highlight reel below.

Each November, the best and brightest (no pun intended) in children’s publishing gather at the Society of Illustrators on Manhattan’s Upper East Side to celebrate their shared passion for picture book illustration. The SOI’s Original Art show is unique in its presentation of picture book art in a gallery setting; the process of illlustrating a book is often a very solitary one for artists, making it all the more exciting to gather, socialize, and admire the work on the walls as a community.

On a hot and sleepy Saturday morning at the end of July, Aura Lewis walked into Books Are Magic, the new, yet already beloved, independent bookstore in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Aura is the author and illustrator of picture book biography Gloria’s Voice, praised by Kirkus as “a subtle ode to an iconic figure of quiet strength and enormous influence,’” and she was at Books Are Magic to read Gloria’s story aloud to a packed house of young readers (and perhaps, future activists themselves!). She was joined by fellow author Anna Raff, as part of Back 2 Back, a series presented by The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrated that pairs newcomers to the industry with veterans.

As we readied the coffee and pastries, aspiring children’s book illustrators began to arrive, excited to hear words of wisdom from Bright’s founder and managing director, Vicki Willden-Lebrecht, as well as Bright senior trade agent Anne Moore Armstrong, associate art director at HarperCollins Chelsea C. Donaldson and veteran children’s bookseller Tina Sorrentino.
