Behind the Book: How Big is Big? with Judi Abbot

last updated 15 June 2026

We sat down with Judi Abbot to discuss her new novelty book with Paper Engine. We talked about her creative process, her favourite spreads and what it was really like to work behind the scenes on a pop-up book for the very first time.

What did you think when you first heard about the project? How did you feel?

I remember when Robyn first told me about this project. The idea that Paper Engine, a paper engineering company, was launching its own publishing list and wanted me to illustrate one of its debut books was incredibly exciting! I’ve always loved pop-up books and have been fascinated by the mechanisms behind the moving elements. The opportunity to be involved behind the scenes and help bring one to life was something I couldn’t wait to do.

Can you tell me about your illustrative process?

This project began with Geff’s brief (the Creative Director at Paper Engine and the author of the book) and I was immediately impressed by how detailed it was. He wanted to make sure I fully understood all the mechanisms behind the flaps and pop-ups in the illustrations. He sent me videos and a couple of paper dummies to explain how everything would work.

It was such a rewarding experience to be so involved in the creation of the book from the very beginning. I started with sketches, and Geff would edit them directly onto a dummy so I could better understand how the pop-up elements would function. The enthusiasm throughout the process was always incredibly high!

I created the sketches in Procreate, and for the colouring stage, I incorporated acrylic textures and backgrounds that I painted specifically for the book.

What’s your favourite spread from the book?

I absolutely love the little ant, it’s so curious and sweet! But if I had to choose a favourite spread, it would probably be the savanna scene with the lion and his cub. That said, I also have a soft spot for the whale spread. Seeing that enormous whale rise up from the page creates such a dramatic and magical moment.

I saw on Instagram that you’ve been doing some events promoting the book - could you tell us a bit about that?

Yes! At Muswell Hill Bookshop & Parlour in London, I did a reading of the book, followed by a workshop where we created a pop-up card together. The event was free and ideal for children aged 3 to 6. I love meeting lots of young readers and having fun together!

What’s next for you? Any exciting new projects or ideas in the works?

I’ve had so many children asking me, “When are you going to make a How Small Is Small? book?” and that always makes me smile. At the moment, there aren’t any plans for a sequel, but the fact that children are already asking for more feels like a very good sign, doesn’t it?
