Becca Stadtlander Wins The SCBWI Golden Kite Award
last updated 12 February 2019
Instituted in 1973, the Golden Kite Awards are the only children’s literary award judged by a jury of peers. More than 1,000 books are entered each year. The Golden Kite Awards recognize excellence in children’s literatures in five categories: Young Reader and Middle Grade Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text, and Picture Book Illustration.
This year, Bright Artist Becca Stadtlander was awarded the award in the category of Picture Book Illustration for her illustrations in Made by Hand: A Crafts Sampler by Carole Lexa Schaefer, published by Candlewick Press.
As reported by Publishers Weekly, Becca had this to say of the experience: “I don’t normally find myself in this sort of situation.” She received the award for picture book illustration for Made by Hand: A Crafts Sampler by Carole Lexa Schaefer (Candlewick). She explained that her time is typically spent in solitude. “I paint, I think. I paint. I think some more.” Stadtlander expressed the joy of connecting with other children’s book creators through the SCBWI, and the value of being a part of such a community.”
