Amalia Yonaki
Amalia is a Chilean-Bangladeshi writer from London.
Her love of storytelling began at a young age and her imagination was captured by tales of her parents’ homelands and the wild and contrasting landscapes, as well as their experiences as refugees.
Amalia’s mixed heritage was both a source of strength and shame growing up. Her family moved to a small, English town in the Cotswolds, where there were not many other people of colour. She held on tightly to the richness of her roots and later pursued a degree in Hispanic Studies at Queen Mary, University of London where she would be inspired by the magical realism of Marquez and the surrealism of Lorca.
Amalia has worked as a community organiser and advocate for refugees’ and migrants’ rights, as well as a curator focused on platforming underrepresented voices.
She is a mother to two young children and is motivated to develop positive stories around identity, climate and social justice.
