Brian Wildsmith Estates Joins The Bright Agency

last updated 18 May 2026

Paul Black at Bright will represent the estate across publishing and licensing, solidifying Bright’s place as a 360 degree Agency

The Estate of Brian Wildsmith, one of the most influential figures in the history of children’s illustration, has appointed Paul Black at The Bright Agency as their full-service representation, working across literary, licensing and dramatisation. The appointment marks a significant expansion of Bright’s growing portfolio of heritage publishing brands.

Paul Black, Bright’s Brand Partnerships Director said of the appointment: “Brian Wildsmith’s work is nothing short of extraordinary and I have been desperate to work on this incredible body of work since I met Brian in 2010. Having re-connected with his family last year I am delighted that we’re now forging a new path together. Brian’s work is an eruption of colour, joy and artistic ambition that changed the course of children’s publishing - he is very much the illustrators illustrator, his books belong in the same breath as the great classics of the children’s book canon. Our commitment is to ensure that this luminous body of work doesn’t simply rest on its laurels, but finds its way into the hands and hearts of a whole new generation.”

Brian Wildsmith, who died in 2016, created over 80 books across a career spanning six decades, winning the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1962 for his celebrated ABC, published by Oxford University Press. Those books have been translated into 30 languages, published in 45 countries with worldwide sales of over 20 million copies. Brian’s work drew comparisons to the finest painters of the twentieth century.

Bright will now focus on building momentum across Wildsmith’s core titles and licensed products. This includes expanding existing ranges through new partnerships and fresh uses of his artwork, while also launching a new licensing programme based on Brian’s art, bringing renewed visibility to one of the most distinctive bodies of work in British publishing history.

Bright’s work has already started, supporting the Wildsmith Estate on contracts for the most ambitious exhibition ever held of Brian’s work to be held in Seoul, South Korea - 7 July to 16 October 2026. The first of its kind, this exhibition hopes to open up the wider Asian market to Brian’s work.

“Art is food for the soul. A picture book represents a child’s very first encounter with art so I felt this was a way I could make a contribution to the world. A drop in the ocean maybe, but this work offered a chance to communicate to children the importance of such things as kindness, compassion, friendship, beauty.” Brian Wildsmith

Representing the Estate, his children have said: “Our father’s work has been loved around the world for more than sixty years and continuing to share his legacy remains deeply important to us. In Bright, we have found a partner who truly understands what makes his art so special and timeless. Their passion for his work and their vision for its future means we can look forward to it reaching whole new generations, while remaining true to the distinctive character and vision of Brian’s artwork.”

“We believe thoughtful licensing strengthens publishing,” says Paul Black, Brand Partnerships Director at Bright. “We’ve seen it first-hand with brands such as Elmer, Brambley Hedge and Guess How Much I Love You. Increased visibility through sensitive and appropriate licensing activity supports book sales and provides the foundations for screen development. Brian Wildsmith’s work has an extraordinary visual identity: that signature explosion of colour and pattern is immediately recognisable and translates powerfully across product, retail and screen.”

Vicki Willden-Lebrecht, CEO and Founder of The Bright Agency added: “What strikes me about the Wildsmith catalogue is its sheer breadth and ambition. This is not a single character or a single story, it is a world view. A philosophy about colour, beauty and the capacity of art to speak directly to children. That requires a thoughtful, considered strategy, and we are absolutely committed to doing it justice.”

Bright’s licensing division works with more than 2,000 partners globally and independently bills over £1 million annually, giving the agency the infrastructure and commercial reach that differs from traditional literary-only models. Wildsmith’s reputation in the United States and Japan is particularly strong, and with the growing appetite for bold, painterly illustration in international markets, the opportunity to bring his work to an even wider global audience feels both natural and timely. Bright’s US agency and team will be central to this effort from the outset.

“There is one source of happiness that never changes, regardless of age and that is creativity. I was expressing in colour the wonder and beauty of the world in which we live.” Brian Wildsmith

With the appointment of the Brian Wildsmith Estate, Bright continues its expansion into heritage brand management, bringing the same entrepreneurial energy it applies to breakout new talent to beloved properties with an already devoted audience around the world.

Bright is now actively seeking partners and collaborators across publishing, retail and licensing to realise the full potential of one of the most extraordinary creative legacies in children’s publishing.
