Olga’s artwork reminds me of books from my childhood: Eerie Fairytales, sometimes with a dark undertone, sometimes other-worldly, and now and again just beautifully nostalgic, homely and warm. I think of artists like Kit Williams, who wrote the very famous Masquerade in the 1970s, which I would spend hours looking at, trying to find the clues, and the famous realist painter, Anthony Green, who’s paintings defy the contraints of a rectangle or square, capturing snippets of his life with perspectives all askew. Jane Newland has a distinctive and extremely eye-catching style. Her illustrations are green and luscious — the fronds of every fern, every leaf are detailed with soft looking textures, like a springy moss or camomile lawn.

At Bright we work with all genres of illustration, and our Art Licensing division is a huge part of the company. The wonderful thing about working with illustrators is how versatile they can be in terms of design, allowing their work to cross between our two main genres — those being the greetings card industry and children’s picture book publishing.

Bright Group International has been an illustration agency for over 13 years. Beginning from a tiny bedroom in Clapham, Bright Founder and MD Vicki Willden-Lebrecht made it her mission to champion artists and illustrators, to help them become the best they could possibly be and to propel those creators of children’s books back into having ‘rock star’ recognition in a world where digital was fast becoming the thing. The ethos is that a book must be valued as a beautiful creation, unlike anything the digital world can offer. There is no doubt that there will always be a place for children’s books in physical form — there’s just something about a book isn’t there?
