Ryan Nelsen

Ryan Nelsen is an illustrator from Long Island, New York. He fell in love with drawing after getting his first Magna Doodle, where he drew a perfect (well, perfect for a 3-year-old) rendering of Thomas the Tank Engine.

He enjoys combining traditional and digital media to create playful and whimsical artwork, cultivating a world full of texture, vibrancy, and imagination. He often starts his pieces by scribbling, cutting paper, painting, and assembling mixed-media collages, ensuring that each illustration starts with a purposeful and tactical approach.

Ryan studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, where he earned a BFA in Communications Design. By day, Ryan is a visual designer at Scholastic, living in New York City with his twin sister, Becca.

Ryan’s debut author-illustrated picture book Abduckted is set to publish with HarperCollins in the spring of 2027, followed by Salvador Snake in the fall of 2027, written by Suzy Levinson and published by Balzer + Bray.
