Robert Rigby and Gillian Flint on 'Waterways' for CBeebies Radio
last updated 20 March 2017
We are delighted to announce a new partnership between Bright artist Gillian Flint, and writer Robert Rigby.
Robert Rigby, author and dramatist across television, theatre and radio – most recently an adaptation of Alan Sillitoe’s THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER for BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Drama slot – first worked for CBeebies Radio on his innovative series on phonics, SOUNDS LIKE THIS (2015).
CBeebies Radio’s daily on-line pre-school children’s audio service is part of the CBeebies multi-platform digital family and aims to provide child-led content that reflects the family life of children within the UK. CBeebies Radio is also on the BBC iPlayer Radio App daily 6am-10am.
Janet Fillingham of Literary Agency ‘Janet Fillingham Associates’ said:
“We are delighted that Robert’s new project for CBeebies Radio is WATERWAYS, ten stories exploring the importance and wonder of water. In each episode Robert is our storyteller, with the stories and songs enhanced by children’s voices recorded on location at a primary school. The children are not ‘in’ the stories but address the listeners or comment on elements of the narrative. To his own acoustic guitar accompaniment Robert sings each episode’s original song and adds vocal harmonies. Atmospheric watery sound effects also feature.” “The series was commissioned through the Robert Rigby Partnership, which in turn has commissioned original illustrations for each programme from artist Gillian Flint, represented by children’s illustration and art licensing agency ‘The Bright Group’, and these joyful visuals are a perfect complement to Robert’s carefully crafted but playful scripts.” WATERWAYS airs on CBeebies Radio every Wednesday from 15 March to 17 May 2017 here: www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/radio
Author Robert Rigby commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed creating and producing WATERWAYS for CBeebies Radio. As soon as I saw examples of Gill’s work I was convinced her art and ideas would be exactly right for my scripts and the series. And I was correct, the illustrations work brilliantly.” After such a successful and enjoyable collaboration, Robert and Gill are keen to work together again and are discussing further potential projects.
Illustrator Gillian Flint commented: ‘It’s been wonderful working with Robert and illustrating such a creative series of stories. I’ve enjoyed it immensely and hope that there is more to come!’
‘It’s been a fantastic collaboration, and for Bright to partner with Janet and Robert for such a multi channelled project; to bring words and pictures together for an audio storytelling is something rather special,’ said Senior Agent at Bright, Hannah Curtis.
