My First Year at Bright: Ryan Nelsen
last updated 18 August 2025
In this series, we interview Bright Artists who recently joined our agency to discover what the first part of their Bright journey was like. Read on to hear their journeys to being represented by Bright, and key advice they have for aspiring illustrators.
We caught up with Ryan Nelsen, an illustrator from Long Island, New York. Ryan creates playful and whimsical artwork through his combination of both digital and traditional media. He often starts his pieces by scribbling, cutting paper, painting and assembling mixed-media collages. Ryan joined us immediately after gradutaing from Pratt School of Art and Design in Brooklyn, NY, and we’re thrilled to chat with him about how his first year as a Bright artist went.
Share how you found out about Bright, and when you knew you wanted to submit your portfolio.
I first discovered Bright during my junior year of college, when I started leaning into simpler storytelling with a focus on humor. I was completely pulled into the world of picture books and visual development, and I turned to some of my favorite illustrators, including Benji Davies, Matt Hunt, and Chris Chatterton, only to find they were all represented by Bright.
From there, I kept pushing to develop my voice and visual style. By senior year, I had the chance to attend the winter SCBWI conference and felt ready to share what I’d been working on. I knew I still had a long way to go, but I took a chance, and I am so glad I did.
What are some aspects you’ve learned about the kidlit industry that you weren’t aware of before being represented by Bright?
How many lovely people are in this industry, and how many moving parts go into a single project! At Bright and beyond, I’m meeting new faces all the time. Everyone is so supportive in helping my silliest ideas come to life.
Looking to the future, what are you most excited about?
I recently illustrated my first project for Highlights, which was a pinch-me moment. I have some BIG things coming soon that I am very excited to share…keep an eye on me!
Do you have any advice for illustrators who are just starting out in their careers?
Be true to your work, and don’t force yourself to fit in. I was always exhausted when I tried to be the illustrator I wasn’t. If you love what you’re making, everything else will fall into place.
Ryan is represented by Alex Gehringer. To work with Ryan, please get in touch with Alex here.
