Jane Foster

Jane Foster is a children’s illustrator living in Devon in the UK.

She obtained a Music degree, specialising in violin and piano, from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester during the 1980s. After completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Music and Expressive Arts, Jane spent many years teaching music. At the age of 38, after becoming a mother, she decided to shift her career and began working from home as a screen printer and illustrator.

Completely self-taught, Jane has been fortunate to have 36 books published over the past 11 years. Jane has had many collaborations and her designs have appeared in Ikea, John Lewis to name but a few. One highlight was being chosen to create the illustrations for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day. She has a passion for collecting vintage children’s books, old wooden puzzles, and vintage picture dominoes, primarily drawn to their illustrations.

Her work is influenced by the simple designs of Dick Bruna, 1960s Scandinavian ceramics, and vintage fabrics. Jane creates her illustrations with a very fine black pen on paper. After scanning her artwork digitally, she often adds colour, although she enjoys working in monochrome as well.
