Monica Liaw is an illustrator, karaoke marathoner, and polyglot. She grew up in various places, spending her childhood in Taiwan and New Zealand, Shanghai as a teenager, and then the States and Spain later on as an adult. She is currently based in Shanghai, but is always on the move. She graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. After having worked as an art teacher and book designer at HMHCO, she then received her masters in Illustration and Comic at the Elisava School of Engineering and Design in Barcelona.
Monica enjoys illustrating for many fields –from fashion, surface design, to picture books. Across the different fields, she always uses an intuitive and lively way of painting through mixed media, (watercolor, ink, pastel, collage…), merging representation with abstraction.
Monica’s inspirations come from a wide range of sources; from vintage western art and ukiyo-e, to ballroom dancing, as well as music such as classical, jazz, and 80’s Japanese pop. In her free time, she likes to jam on the piano or ukelele, sing, and take photos of old uncles and their mustaches on her travels. (Her favourites being the old uncles and their look-alike dogs in Italy.)
She also loves learning languages and is on her fifth –Italian– after becoming proficient in Spanish and Japanese.
